This week in Thursday Movie Picks – run by Wandering through the Shelves – we’ve been asked to list three to psychological thrillers. As usual, I’ve made my selection from films I have seen.
Fatal Attraction (1987)
I watched this for the first time quite recently and while I knew the gist of the film – and about a certain scene in particular – it was much more layered than I was expecting. There’s much more to both of the lead characters than meets the eye in this look at what happens following an extramarital affair.
Stoker (2013)
It’s been several years since I’ve seen Stoker, which stars Matthew Goode as the enigmatic uncle who comes to live with the mother-daughter duo of Nicole Kidman and Mia Wasikowska following the death of his brother (their husband/father), but I gave it a good write up at the time: read my review. Fun fact: it was written by Wentworth Miller.
Gone Girl (2014)
This is an unforgettable film, and it’s for that reason that I was wowed on my first viewing but have enjoyed it less on subsequent viewings. Based on Gillian Flynn’s novel, Gone Girl follows Ben Affleck’s Nick as he reports the sudden disappearance of his wife Amy (Rosamund Pike).
I almost picked Gone Girl as well!! But then I remembered that I never watched the movie, but just the trailer and read the book haha didn’t think it was a good idea to put it on my list without actually watching it.
Ha, I think your logic is sound! For Thursday Movie Picks I only choose films I have seen.
I’d like to read the book, but I’m not sure there’s much value in it after watching the film. What do you think?
I don’t really think it’s necessary to read the book afterwards to be honest. From what I heard, it’s all very similar and it’s kind of lengthy and boring when you already know the outcome. I doubt it would add much.
I haven’t seen your first pick but I LOVE Stoker and Gone Girl. Those were both excellent.
Ah, finally someone who has also watched Stoker! I’m well overdue a rewatch but I don’t think I’ve ever seen it come up on any of my streaming services.
I know that I watched Stoker but I can’t seem to remember anything about it. Due for a rewatch soon!
I remember it fairly well because of the casting. I’m due a rewatch though.
I have not seen Stoker but Fatal Attraction is good and I remember it lol in the. News and that there were less men stepping out on their wives out of fear. Gone Girl is really quite good but she was batshit crazy
I read about that! Funny how films have such an effect like that. Reminds me of Jaws. Have you seen Promising Young Woman? I wonder if it’ll have the same effect with the subject matter of that film. I hope it does.
Glad we both went w/ Gone Girl but Stoker and Fatal Attraction are both excellent picks! STOKER is actually really good, wish I had thought of it. I remember seeing Fatal Attraction when I was in my 20s I think and boy Glenn Close was terrifying! Poor bunny!!
Poor bunny indeed, Ruth! Glad you liked my picks 🙂
Good ones! I especially like Fatal Attraction. Guilty pleasure. Glenn Close is great in it. 🙂
She certainly is! I read an interesting interview in Vanity Fair with her that was written on the 30th anniversary of the film. It’s an interesting piece: link.
Oh, cool – thanks for the link! Gonna check it out. 😁
