Here’s my last post this year for ‘Thursday Movie Picks’, a long-running series started by Wandering through the Shelves. This week we’re being asked to list three to five TV shows related to space and/or aliens.
When I first read this week’s theme my initial reaction was to not take part, as I haven’t watched that many space-related TV shows recently: I watched the first three episodes of Space Force (2020) but gave up, and have yet to start Away (2020).
However, there are some older shows, as well as a brilliant new one, that I have enjoyed.
Ah, Firefly, the show that first brought Nathan Fillion to my attention. This short-lived show, about the crew of the ‘Serenity’, a ‘Firefly-class’ spaceship, was a fan favourite and led to the production of Serenity, a follow-up film that was released in 2005.
I used to watch the odd episode of this American-Australian production on BBC 2 after school. I can’t remember any of the plot details, but there was a wonderful array of fantastic aliens and quite an epic soundtrack.
The Mandalorian (2019)
I’m a little late to the party on this one, having only watched it this month, but I am hooked on this Space Western about a lone warrior. It’s fantastic being back in the Star Wars universe, and while a lot of elements from the show are familiar, the length of the 30-40 minute episodes is refreshing, the new planets are exciting and the music has a new vibe all of its own.
