On the way to work the other morning one of my favourite David Bowie songs, ‘Golden Years’, came on my iPod. Whenever I hear this song it always reminds me of the fabulous ball scene in A Knight’s Tale.
Released in 2001 and starring the late Heath Ledger against Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon and Paul Bettany, A Knight’s Tale is the story of William Thatcher, a charismatic young squire who dreams of taking to the jousting arena, something that only knights can do.
The soundtrack to this light-hearted, fun action film feature a fantastic range of upbeat and catchy songs, including Bowie’s ‘Golden Years’, Queen’s ‘We Will Rock You’ and Thin Lizzy’s ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’. ‘We Will Rock You’ is used to great effect during one of the jousting scenes, when all of the crowd starts chanting the iconic words.
‘Golden Years’ is used when William (Ledger) – under the disguise of Sir Ulrich von Liechtenstein of Gelderland – dances with the beautiful noblewoman Jocelyn (Dawson) at a ball organised for the jousting. ‘Golden Years’ kicks in when William is asked to perform a dance from Gelderland. Enjoy!
Great song, also remember we will rock you appearing in this movie
I thought the use of ‘We Will Rock You’ was spot on – love this film!
Hi Claire! Oh I LOVE this movie. There are sooo many great actors in it, Heath is fantastic but I also enjoyed Rufus Sewell and James Purefoy in this. Great music indeed!
When I was writing this post I was reminded how much I enjoy this film – I’m definitely overdue a rewatch! 😀
Such a great film, and a brilliant use of soundtrack…. Modern with the old!!
🙂
Are you back now C?
I am! Will be posting my review of Prometheus later today and I have something lined up for later in the week as well 🙂
I love this film, such great escapism and one of Heath Ledger’s more charismatic roles. The music works so well, particularly We Will Rock You. I could never understand though why William chose the insipid Jocelyn over Kate who was much more feisty.
