Today – 22nd August – is the 40th birthday of the lovely Richard Armitage.
Well-known on the small screen, Armitage has appeared in such TV series as Cold Feet, The Vicar of Dibley, Robin Hood, Spooks and Strike Back. His first major film role was in this year’s Captain America: The First Avenger, where he played Heinz Kruger.
In 2012 and 2013 he will be taking to our screens in one of the most important roles of his career: Thorin Oakenshield, in Peter Jackson’s two-film adaptation of J R R Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
Thorin Oakenshield is the leader of a group of 12 dwarves who, accompanied by Gandalf the Grey and Bilbo Baggins, attempt to reclaim their treasure from the dragon Smaug.
To say I’m looking forward to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) and The Hobbit: There and Back Again (2013) is an understatement… I really can’t wait. There are literally thousands and thousands of Tolkien fans and, due to the The Lord of the Rings’ success, there are high expectations on PJ’s return to Middle-earth.
