Happy birthday, Gary Oldman!

Today – 21st March – is the 53rd birthday of one my favourite actors: Gary Oldman.

Courtesy of IMDb, Gary Leonard Oldman was born in New Cross, London.

After attending Rose Burford College in Kent, Oldman’s first starring role was as the Sex Pistols’ Sid Vicious in Sid & Nancy (1986). For his portrayal, Oldman won the Evening Standard British Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer.

After gaining further success, Oldman hit the big time with Oliver Stone’s JFK (1991). The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director.

The following year Oldman teamed up with another Hollywood heavyweight, Francis Ford Coppola, for Dracula (1992). Taking the eponymous role himself, Oldman’s co-stars included Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves and Anthony Hopkins. In recognition for his role, Oldman won the Saturn Award for Best Actor at the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, USA.

In 1994 Oldman appeared in one of my favourite films, Leon. Oldman portrays a bent Policeman opposite a 14-year-old Natalie Portman – this being Portman’s feature film debut.

Since then Oldman has appeared in many cult favourites including Mr Zorg in The Fifth Element, James Gordon in The Dark Knight series and Sirius Black in the Harry Potter series.
