So, last night I watched The Expendables. That means that I have now watched all of ‘The Big 3 Action Films of Summer 2010’ aka The Expendables, The Losers and The A-Team. There have been other great movies this summer but these were the three I most wanted to see.
Admittedly, all three films are quite similar. A small team of kickass fighters must go do some terribly hard mission in order to reclaim something. In the case of The Losers and The A-Team, the plot is very, very similar. To help you out, my boyfriend, who has watched them all with me, has summed up each film in just one word:
- The Expendables — “loud”
- The Losers — “cool”
- The A-Team — “fun”
Here are my, slightly more lengthy, reviews.
Director: Sylvester Stallone
Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Eric Roberts
If you like fast-moving, loud action movies then The Expendables is for you. Packed full with big bangs, nifty knives and a hella lotta guns, this film never stops for a breather. Eric Roberts fit the part of the villain nicely and Sylvester Stallone can just about pull off his demanding role. Jason Statham is great — I readily admit I’m a big fan of The Stath — and there are some very comical one-liners. In some parts it does feel like Stallone has made a film just to give himself a chance to be a big kid and run around with guns and explosives. As long as you don’t expect an intricate plot, then The Expendables is an enjoyable throwback to ole Sly’s heyday.
Director: Joe Carnahan
Starring: Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Sharlto Copley, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson
As I have never watched The A-Team TV series, I had no preconceptions as to what the film would be like. I did really enjoy the film and in some parts it was proper laugh out loud funny. Bradley Cooper was charming and comical, while Liam Neeson did fit the role of Hannibal. However, when it comes to Liam Neeson and action, I think I prefer him as the heroic father in Taken. The plot isn’t perfect and there are a few plot holes, but it is an enjoyable film. In my opinion, Sharlto Copley is the standout star of the film. I’ll be keeping a close eye on his career.
Director: Sylvain White
Starring: Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Chris Evans
I have to agree with my boy here, this film is just epically cool. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is excellent throughout and is completely believable as the leader of an elite specials forces unit. His character, Clay, is the epitome of hardness — and downright coolness. Zoe Saldana leaves Pandora behind her and becomes an enigmatic and dangerous woman as Aisha. Empire called the film “explosive entertainment” and I completely agree. If you want a fast-paced film which is highly comical in places (cue Chris Evans) then The Losers is for you.
