Lights, camera, Oscars!

Today (2 February, 2010) the Oscar nominations were announced courtesy of Anne Hathaway and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak. I am very, very excited to see who will be this year’s victors.

Apart from the news that Avatar and The Hurt Locker are both up for nine Oscars, there are two other more intriguing news stories. Firstly, it is a battle of the ex-spouses as James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow are both nominated for Best Director for Avatar and The Hurt Locker respectively. I have only seen Avatar so I can’t call favour for one or the other. However, if Bigelow wins the Oscar then she will be the first woman to win the award. She is just one of four women to have been nominated in Oscar history.

Secondly, the fantastic Meryl Streep has been nominated for the 16th time, a feat unmatched by any other person. Nominated for Julie and Julia, Streep portrays famed American chef Julia Child who brought French cuisine to the American public in the 1960s. I wholeheartedly believe that Streep is well overdue her Oscar glory. Out of her previous 15 nominations, 12 for Best Actress and three for Best Supporting Actress, Streep has only won twice: Best Supporting Actress for 1979’s Kramer vs. Kramer and Best Actress in 1982’s Sophie’s Choice.

I love Meryl Streep. She has a terrific stage presence and has portrayed such a large and varied group of characters in her 30 year career. Undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s finest actresses, she is my personal favourite to win.

The 82nd Academy Awards will be a magnificent affair, complete with the usual fashion wins and fashion faux-pas. With 10 films  nominated for Best Picture, for the first time since 1943, competition is fierce. British actors are in force too, with nominations for Carey Mulligan, Colin Firth and Helen Mirren.

Roll on 7 March!
